What your MT4 workspace needs
An MT4 VPS provides a remote computer for the client terminal. It can keep the workspace available independently of your home PC, while you reconnect through Remote Desktop to manage charts and programs. The hosting scope covers the environment; account access and trading instructions remain under your control.
Start with the MT4 version supplied for your broker account. Record the exact Expert Advisors, indicators, chart templates and external libraries you use. A simple charting terminal and a calculation-heavy EA can create very different loads, even when each runs one account.
Choose a configuration for the active session
Use a busy market session to measure memory, the most heavily used CPU core and log growth. Include the other software that will remain open. The examples above are starting points for a quotation, rather than a promise about how many terminals a server supports.
- Prefer consistent CPU performance when an EA spends substantial time calculating on one core.
- Keep enough free memory for Windows and terminal updates as well as the trading programs.
- Allocate usable disk capacity for history, journals, snapshots and recovery copies.
- Compare the network path to the account server before selecting a city.
If several accounts or applications already compete for resources, compare dedicated MT4 hosting and use the MT4 sizing worksheet to prepare a measurable brief.
Move an existing MT4 installation
- Back up the original terminal and identify its data folder, account-server name and program dependencies.
- Install the intended broker terminal on the VPS. Recreate the charts and restore only the programs and settings you need.
- Check program permissions, any external integrations and the Experts and Journal output using a demo environment.
- Compare operation during a representative session. Agree a change window and stop duplicate automated processes before transferring live activity.
A paid EA may use a machine-bound activation. Check its licence and migration procedure with the software vendor before replacing the original environment. Keep the source computer available until the replacement is accepted.
Remote access, restarts and support
Disconnecting Remote Desktop normally leaves programs running while the Windows session remains active. Signing out closes that session; restarting Windows interrupts the programs. Session policies can change this behaviour, so the acceptance check must cover your actual settings.
Confirm who configures start-up, applies Windows updates, reviews connection problems and restores files. Record the difference between infrastructure support and debugging an EA. The service scope comparison makes those responsibilities explicit.
| Check | Evidence to keep |
|---|---|
| Broker connection | Correct account server and a stable demo connection. |
| Expert Advisors | Expected permissions and clean program logs. |
| RDP disconnect | Terminal remains active under the agreed session policy. |
| Planned restart | Documented recovery of the user session and required programs. |
| Backup recovery | A usable copy of the required settings and files. |
